Asphalt Repair Contractors in Kansas City, MO
Utility cuts, shoved entrances, potholes, and failed base — repaired to the depth the damage actually reaches, from the Crossroads to the Northland.
Tarmasters repairs asphalt across Kansas City, Missouri — settled utility cuts, shoving at truck entrances, potholes, and failed base. Under most of the city sits Wymore series expansive clay, which holds water and moves seasonally, so a repair that lasts is decided below the surface. Insured and bonded, working the metro since 2014.
Repair work in Kansas City does not look like repair work in the suburbs. The urban core is cut open constantly for utilities, and the patch left behind is often the worst pavement on the block. Where freight brakes and turns, the asphalt does not crack so much as move. And along the riverfront, lots that have carried trucks since before the current buildings went up are at the end of a structural life, not in the middle of one.
Those are three different problems with three different answers, and the wrong answer is expensive in a specific way: it looks fixed for a season. This page covers repair inside the city. For paving and resurfacing across this market, see the Kansas City paving hub, or how we handle repair across the metro.
Built for the ground under Kansas City
Three forces work on every repair in this city, and a patch that ignores any one of them is a temporary patch.
Wymore series expansive clay
Clay that swells when it takes on water and shrinks back when it dries. Under a thin or contaminated base it holds moisture against the asphalt and moves with the season, so pavement gets pushed and dropped from below rather than worn from above.
40 freeze-thaw cycles a year
Frost reaches about 36 inches and roughly 42 inches of rain falls on the city each year. Every crack that is open in November is a wider crack in March.
Round-the-clock freight
Class 8 traffic runs I-70 and I-670 continuously, and construction hauling adds to it. Heavy braking and turning shoves asphalt sideways at signalized intersections and lot entries instead of simply cracking it.
Why does Kansas City asphalt fail over Wymore clay?
Six patterns account for most of what we are called out for here. Each one has a different cause underneath it, and the cause is what decides the repair.
Utility cuts that never healed
Trench patches through Downtown, the Crossroads Arts District, and Columbus Park are the most common repair call in the urban core. A cut that was backfilled loose settles into a trough, and the seams on both sides open first. Repairing one means taking the patch back to square edges on sound pavement and rebuilding the backfill underneath, not skimming over the dip.
Shoving and rutting at intersections
Where trucks brake and turn — the approaches off Broadway Blvd, US-71, and the Northeast Industrial District entrances — the surface migrates into ridges and washboard. Shoving is a mix and thickness problem, not a surface problem. It comes back unless the section is rebuilt deep enough for the load that caused it.
Potholes over saturated clay
Water gets through an opening, the clay under the base softens, traffic punches the unsupported surface through. The failed area is always wider than the visible hole, which is why filling the hole buys a few months.
Alligator cracking on late-life industrial lots
The riverfront and West Bottoms lots that have carried trucks for decades show connected, scaled cracking across whole bays. At that stage the base has failed structurally and full-depth reclamation is the honest answer; an overlay reproduces the same cracks on the same lines.
Standing water in the river bottoms
Flat lots in the low ground near the Missouri River hold water after rain because there was little fall to begin with. Ponded water accelerates everything else on this list, and the fix is grade or drainage — repaving at the same elevation reproduces the same puddle.
Raveling and oxidation on deferred lots
Older surfaces in Midtown and along the Troost Corridor grey out, lose fines, and start shedding aggregate. Caught early that is a sealing or overlay decision. Left long enough the surface course is gone and it becomes a paving decision.

How we repair asphalt in Kansas City
Walk it and measure
Every failed area gets measured and marked, and we say which ones are surface and which go to the base. On a lot with a dozen defects, that list is usually shorter than owners expect and more expensive in a couple of places than they expect.
Saw square edges
Repairs are cut to straight vertical edges on sound pavement. A torn or feathered edge is a seam that opens in the first winter, so the shape of the cut matters as much as what goes in it.
Deal with the base
Failed material comes out to the depth the failure actually reaches. Wet or contaminated stone is removed and replaced, and on this clay that is the step that decides whether the repair holds.
Place and compact
New asphalt goes in and gets compacted in lifts, tack applied to the vertical faces so the patch bonds to the pavement around it instead of sitting in it as a plug.
Seal the joint, then leave it alone
The perimeter joint is sealed. We tell you when it can take traffic — that depends on mix and temperature, not on when the crew leaves the site.
When a repair will not hold, we say so before it is priced, and we quote the overlay or mill and replace instead. Cracks caught while they are still tight go to crack sealing, which is the cheapest work on this page by a wide margin.
What another two winters does to it
Deferring asphalt repair is a real budget decision, not a mistake. It is worth making with the second column in front of you, because in this climate the repair does not stay the same size.
| Where it is now | What happens if it waits | What the repair turns into |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline crack, under 1/4 inch | Water reaches the base each winter; edges spall and the crack branches | Crack sealing (cheap) turns into patching (not cheap) |
| One pothole in sound pavement | Edges break back and satellite holes open around it | A single saw-cut patch turns into a patched area two or three times the size |
| A settled utility trench | The trough holds water, the seams open the full length | Seam repair turns into replacing the whole trench section |
| Ponding after every rain | Binder strips from the aggregate under standing water | Regrading turns into removal and replacement of that bay |
| Connected cracking in one bay | The pattern spreads through adjacent bays under the same traffic | A section rebuild turns into a full lot reconstruction |

Who you are dealing with
Tarmasters is Kansas City–owned, based in Lee's Summit, and the asphalt division of Ford Concrete and Paving. Insured and bonded, repairing and paving across the metro since 2014. What you get is the failed areas measured, a fixed price, a written note of which areas need full-depth work, and a straight answer when a repair is not worth doing.
Repair questions we get in Kansas City
Can you patch a utility cut so it stops settling?
Yes, but the repair has to go deeper than the asphalt. A trench that keeps dropping is telling you the backfill under it was never compacted in proper lifts. We open the failed length back to square edges, correct the backfill and base, then place and compact new asphalt and seal the joints. Patching only the surface of a settling trench gives you the same trough back within a year or two.
Why does the pavement at our entrance ripple instead of crack?
That is shoving, and it means the asphalt is moving under load rather than breaking. It shows up where heavy vehicles brake, turn, or sit — entrances off arterials, dock approaches, drive-through lanes. The cause is usually a section too thin for the traffic it carries, sometimes combined with a mix too soft for the loading. The fix is rebuilding that area to a depth and mix that match the load; milling the ridges off flat will only buy a season.
Does repair work hold on Kansas City clay?
It holds when the base is addressed. Wymore series expansive clay takes on water and swells, then shrinks back as it dries. A patch resting on wet, unprepared clay flexes exactly the way the pavement that failed did. Repairs here are as much about restoring dry, compacted stone under the failed area as about the asphalt that goes back on top.
Our lot is 40 years old. Is repairing it throwing money away?
Sometimes, and we will say so. If the failures are isolated and the rest of the surface is sound, repairs are good value and buy real years. If cracking is connected across most of the lot, several areas are sinking, and potholes return in the same places, the base is done — at that point patching becomes an annual bill. We will price the repairs and the reconstruction side by side so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.
How much of the metro do you cover from one shop?
We work out of Lee's Summit and cover the Kansas City metro, so Jackson County work is routine for us. Scheduling depends on weather as much as workload — asphalt repair needs dry pavement and workable temperatures. You get a firm date with the estimate.
