Tarmasters replaces, resurfaces, and widens asphalt driveways in Independence, Missouri. The local pattern is a 1950s–1980s ranches and split-levels dominate drive that has been patched and added to over the years, sitting on Wymore series expansive clay. Independence housing is largely 1950s–1980s ranches and split-levels dominate — Glendale, Susquehanna, Englewood, and the streets around Santa Fe Trail. Those houses were built with a single-width drive, and over fifty years most of them have been widened, patched at the apron, or had a parking pad added at the side.
The result is one surface with three different builds underneath it. Each section moves at its own rate over the clay, so cracks open along the seams first and the drive starts failing in strips rather than all at once. It is the single most common thing we are called out to look at here.

Why Independence pavement fails — and how we prevent it
The clay moves
Wymore series expansive clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries out. That volume change works upward through whatever is above it, and a drive built without enough stone under it transmits every bit of it into the surface.
What we do: proof-roll the exposed subgrade, dig out and rebuild the areas that have gone soft, and put down a compacted crushed limestone base at a consistent depth — with a separator fabric where the clay is wet enough to migrate up into the stone.
The water has nowhere to go
Flat lots on the older streets near Noland Rd were built without much drainage design, so the drive itself often has no meaningful fall. Water sits on it, works into the cracks, and then has 40 freeze-thaw cycles a winter to widen them.
What we do: build the fall into the new drive instead of matching what was there, set the apron so water leaves at the street, and keep the low corner of the slab away from the garage.
What actually moves the number on an Independence driveway
Square footage sets the starting point. These five things are what make one drive cost more than the identically sized drive two streets over.

The estimate is measured on site and fixed before work starts. If the subgrade turns out worse than it looked, you hear about it before anything is paved — not afterwards on an invoice.
Four jobs, and how we decide which one you need
Replacement
Everything out, subgrade corrected, base rebuilt, new drive laid in one pass. This is the answer when the old drive is a patchwork of eras and none of them are sound.
Resurfacing
A new wearing course over an existing drive whose base still carries load. Cheaper and quicker — and we will say so when it is the honest answer.
Widenings and parking pads
The extra width a 1950s single-width drive never had. Done properly the new section is built to the same depth as the old one so the seam does not open.
Gravel conversions
Common on the older east-side lots. The stone is usually there already; whether it is deep, clean, and compactable decides how much of it we can keep.

01Look under the patches
On a drive that has been added to over decades, the first job is working out how many builds are under it and which ones are still doing anything.

02Remove and proof-roll
The old material comes out and the subgrade is loaded to find the soft areas. On clay that has been holding water these are rarely where the surface looked worst.

03Fix the water first
Grade is reset so the drive falls away from the house. Where the lot is flat we build the fall in rather than matching what was there.

04Base, in lifts
Crushed limestone compacted in layers to a consistent depth across the whole drive — including the widened section, which is where mismatched bases usually show up.

05Pave, roll, tie in
Hot mix at residential thickness, rolled hot to density, with the apron brought flush to the curb line and the edges backfilled so they are supported.

Independence driveway questions
My drive was widened years ago and the seam keeps opening. Can that be fixed?
The seam is a symptom. It opens because the original drive and the added strip are sitting on different bases and moving independently, so a crack forms where they meet. Filling it is maintenance and worth doing, but it will keep coming back. The permanent fix is to rebuild the two sections on one continuous base so they move together — which is usually done as part of a replacement rather than on its own.
Water runs down my drive toward the garage. Is that fixable without regrading the yard?
Usually. Most of the time the fall can be corrected within the drive itself — building up the low end, adjusting the crown, and setting the apron so water is pushed to the sides and out to the street rather than to the garage slab. On genuinely flat lots there is a limit to what can be done inside the driveway footprint, and if that is your situation we will say so and describe what it would actually take.
Is a resurface a waste of money on an older drive?
Not necessarily. It depends entirely on the base. A 1960s drive that was built with real stone under it and has simply worn out on top is a good candidate. A drive with connected cracking that flexes under a loaded truck is not — new asphalt over a failed base cracks along the same lines within a couple of seasons, and we do not sell those. The proof-roll is what tells us which one you have.
How does winter here actually damage a driveway?
Through water. Independence sees roughly 40 freeze-thaw cycles a winter with frost reaching 36 inches. Water gets into an open crack, freezes, expands, and widens it; the next thaw carries more water deeper. Over Wymore series expansive clay that water has nowhere to drain, so it sits at the base and softens it. Keeping cracks closed is what interrupts the cycle.
