Driveway Paving Serving Leavenworth and Nearby Communities

Tarmasters paves driveways in Leavenworth and the communities around it. The county's glacial till and near-surface limestone mean bearing can change within one driveway, so we probe the ground and vary base depth to match it. Insured and bonded, paving since 2014.
Most of the metro has one ground condition per lot. Leavenworth often has two or three. The county sits on glacial till with limestone shelving close to the surface in places and Grundy-Pawnee series clay in the pockets between — which is why a driveway here can be rock solid at the garage and moving at the street.

Building for Leavenworth's conditions
Ground that changes under one driveway
Glacial till is generally more stable than the heavy clays across the state line in Johnson or Jackson County. What it is not is uniform. Limestone shelves create hard spots with excellent bearing and no drainage; the clay between them swells and shrinks with moisture. A base built to one depth across both conditions cracks at the boundary — so the useful work is probing the ground before pricing, then varying the depth to suit it.
Water off the bluffs
Sloped ground on the western side of the city channels stormwater across parking surfaces and driveways at high velocity. Sheet flow like that erodes base material and undermines an unsupported asphalt edge within a few seasons — the drive itself can be sound while its shoulder disappears. Edge support and a planned route for runoff do more here than an extra inch of asphalt ever would. Add 40 freeze-thaw cycles a winter and frost to 36 inches, and any water left standing has a mechanism to do damage.

Replacement
The full rebuild — old drive out, ground probed and corrected, base rebuilt to variable depth, new drive laid. The right answer on the older historic-district drives where nothing under them was engineered.
Resurfacing
A new wearing course where the base is intact. Over a limestone shelf the base often is intact, which makes a resurface better value here than in the clay counties.
Edge and shoulder rebuilds
Where runoff has undercut the side of a drive that is otherwise sound. Cut back to solid material, rebuild, backfill, and change where the water goes.
Long approaches and gravel conversions
Rural drives outside the city limits, and gravel runs that can often be reworked into the base rather than hauled off.

Probe before pricing
Because bearing changes across a single lot here, we check the ground at more than one point rather than quoting the whole drive off one hole.

Strip and load the subgrade
The old surface comes off and the exposed ground is proof-rolled. Rock rings solid; a clay pocket does not, and the difference is obvious.

Handle the runoff
On the bluff streets water arrives fast and in volume. Before the base goes in, we decide where it will run and how the edge is protected from it.

Variable base depth
Crushed limestone compacted in lifts, deeper over the soft ground and lighter over the shelf — one drive, matched to what is under each part of it.

Pave and support the edges
Hot mix rolled to density while hot, edges backfilled so sheet flow cannot undercut them, and the apron tied flush at the street.

Leavenworth driveway questions
Why does one half of my driveway crack and the other half never moves?
Almost certainly because the two halves are sitting on different ground. Leavenworth County has glacial till with limestone shelving close to the surface in places, and clay in the pockets between. Rock does not move; clay does. A drive built to one uniform depth across both will crack right where the conditions change. The fix is to vary the base depth to suit each part of the run rather than averaging it.
Water runs down the side of my drive and takes the edge with it. What stops that?
On the western bluffs stormwater moves across sloped ground at real velocity, and an unsupported asphalt edge is the first thing it undercuts. Options are to grade the shoulder so water is carried away in a controlled line, to build a valley or swale beside the drive, or to armor the edge. Which one we recommend depends on how much water arrives and where it can legally go. Rebuilding the same unsupported edge is the one option we would not put in a quote.
Does a north-facing drive really behave differently?
In a Leavenworth winter, yes. A drive on the shaded side stays wet longer, thaws later, and goes through the cycle more punishingly. With about 40 freeze-thaw cycles a season and frost reaching 36 inches, water that never gets a chance to dry out is water that keeps working. It is not a reason to build differently so much as a reason to keep the drainage right and the cracks sealed.
